What do you see? What is unique about each of the items?

Life Through a Microscope

Flora: Plant leaves, stems, flower petals, blades of grass, dirt and other natural elements can be fun to look at through a microscope. You can learn a lot about the plants and flowers when you look at their various elements close up using a microscope.

Fauna: Animal hair, whiskers, toe nail clippings, fur, feathers and other animal-based elements can also reveal a lot about the animal when you look at them under a microscope.

Human Body: Saliva, cells from the inside of your cheek, blood, dirt under your fingernails and a wide variety of other substances can be fun to look at under a microscope. Consider rubbing off a little bit of dry skin, or looking at a fingernail clipping for an interesting experience.

Textures: Try snippets of different fabrics, felt, yarn, thread, carpet fibers, plastic bottles and a wide variety of other items that may have textures for you to examine under the microscope. Count the threads in your sheets or pillow cases, or look at the tiny colored threads that make up a colored piece of fabric.

Substances: Try kitchen substances, like food dyes, different types of sugar and salt, baking powder, baking soda, different types of flour, cake mix, the skin from a piece of chicken and any other food substances or kitchen substances that you can get your hands on. What different textures and colors do you see that you did not expect?
